Kelby Grovender

Kelby Grovender, Executive Director, joined Hearth Connection in August 2010. Kelby has worked with people experiencing homelessness for 23 years in both the Twin Cities and Los Angeles, and he has served on the boards of several homeless advocacy groups. He was most recently the Director of Housing Operations for Mental Health Resources, Inc. of St. Paul, MN. Previously he spent 12 years with the American Indian Community Development Corporation (AICDC) where he developed Anishinabe Wakiagun, a culturally specific supportive housing program targeting chronically homeless American Indian adults. As Director of Chemical Health at AICDC, Kelby also oversaw the Kola Health Outreach Project and the AICDC Detoxification Services. He has made numerous presentations about Anishinabe Wakiagun and harm reduction strategies in the United States and Canada, in addition to consulting and training in the areas of harm reduction, supportive housing, and Housing First. Kelby has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology and Philosophy from the University of Minnesota and a Master of Divinity degree with a concentration in cross-cultural studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, CA.

Anthony Coleman

Anthony Coleman, Rental Assistance Manager, joined the Hearth Connection team in July 2015. He most recently came from St. Stephen's Human Services as a Rental Assistance Coordinator, overseeing all inspections, contracts and housing information for their subsidy programs. Anthony was also a direct service worker in shelters at Catholic Charities and St. Stephen's over the past five years. Prior to working for these organizations, he lived in Southern California working with aerospace companies, training individuals on using industrial inkjet printers to mark products such as airplane wings, catalytic converters and motherboards for PCs.

David O'Leary

David O’Leary, Northeast Regional Manager, has been with Hearth Connection since October of 2008. David’s experience includes working in a variety of faith-based and secular settings. David began his work with homelessness while studying at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, Minnesota and Saint John Vianney Theological Seminary in Denver, Colorado. Prior to his seminary studies, David worked as a certified welder for various manufacturing firms throughout Northeastern Minnesota. David holds a Bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota.

Heather Duchscherer

Heather Duchscherer, Metro Regional Manager, joined the Hearth team in the beginning of 2016. Heather began her career as a social worker in an emergency shelter for homeless women and families in Fargo, ND. Since then, she's coordinated a community-based domestic violence program, provided case management in a supportive housing program for people experiencing long-term-homelessness, and has been involved in miscellaneous other social service and social justice endeavors. Heather has completed masters degrees in social work and public policy at the University of Minnesota. Her research at the Humphrey School focused on the integration of domestic violence services providers into implementation of coordinated entry. In her free time, she enjoys reading, playing with her two companion rabbits and volunteering for organizations like the Association of Macro Practice Social Workers.

Julie Jones

Julie Jones, Office & Human Resources Manager, joined the Hearth Connection team in October 2008. Julie has a degree in Business Administration and has extensive experience working in this field. She worked as Office Manager at African American Family Services where she supervised and managed the support services team. After 8 years with AAFS, Julie took her skills to Transformation House where she supervised program assistants, secretaries, and oversaw all medication services. She also worked directly alongside the Executive Director, assisting in daily operations.

Katrina Josephson

Katrina Josephson, Communications Specialist, joined the Hearth Connection team in March 2015. Katrina has a degree in Video Broadcasting from the University of Northwestern - St. Paul, MN. Before landing at Hearth, she has lived in five countries and worked in customer service, communications, promotions and event coordination. When she's not finding unique ways to share Hearth's stories, Katrina can be found camping, traveling or hosting bonfires in her backyard.

Nita Miller

Nita pictureNita (Anita) Miller, Senior Accountant, joined Hearth Connection in 2011. Nita has been a non-profit human service professional for more than 20 years. Utilizing her AA degree in Accounting from Hibbing Community College, she has contributed to the Twin Cities nonprofit community through a broad spectrum of accounting, fund development, and program development positions since 1991. She has done advocacy work, public speaking, classroom facilitation, group training programs, and was instrumental in introducing divorce education to the Twin Cities area.  Nita is also a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) and has been teaching in various organizations since 2005.  In addition to her role at Hearth Connection, Nita is concentrating on building her own yoga business to share its many benefits.

Paul Carlson

Paul Carlson, Director of Quality & Evaluation, joined the Hearth Connection team in July 2014. Previously, Paul worked at Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities, most recently as the Director of Evaluation and Data Management. He also worked as an advisor and math teacher at Avalon School in St. Paul. Paul holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Grinnell College.

Taunia Gorka

Taunia Gorka, Finance Director, joined the organization in April 2016 and brings a love of organizational management to her position. She has been active in the implementation of financial systems for many organizations; amassing over 15+ years of experience. Taunia graduated Magna Cum Laude from St Catherine University with a degree in Accounting and is currently enrolled in the Master’s program of Accountancy from St Mary’s University of Minnesota. Taunia holds certificates as a Business Analyst and Project Leadership from Boston University and Cornell University. She loves to spend time reading, collecting pottery and relaxing on the lake. Her second calling in life is to pursue a career in architecture.

Tom Vox

TomTom Vox, Director of Technology, joined Hearth Connection in July 2013. Tom began his career supporting technology in multiple school districts in the state of Minnesota and moved on to open source web development for several companies in Texas, most recently Bank of America, where he developed business intelligence reporting tools as an information security engineer. Tom holds Master’s degrees in software engineering and information systems from the University of St. Thomas and the University of North Texas, respectively.

Warren Duncan

Warren Duncan, Program Director, joined Hearth Connection in January 2009. As a native of Des Moines, Iowa, he graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. in Sociology. He began his career as a volunteer at a soup kitchen and delivered meals to the homeless on the streets of Des Moines. Warren has worked with homeless children in an emergency shelter, worked with at-risk adolescents at an alternative high school, supervised a group home in the southern metro, and served as a Case Manager for the chronically homeless of the Twin Cities. Warren also has experience in the financial industry, as he spent a year as a Financial Representative for a local firm. He currently volunteers in the homeless community and has been a guest lecturer at the University of Minnesota on housing and homelessness in the Twin Cities Metro Area.
