Glenn Andis, Ph.D. joined the Board in February 2005. He is Sr. Vice President of Government Programs, Medica Health Plans. He is responsible for directing the development and operations of the Medica State Public Programs (Medicaid and MinnesotaCare), Senior Products (Medicare), and the Commercial Individual Products. He also oversees the behavioral, dental, transplant and chiropractic network management for Medica. Previous to this position, Mr. Andis was Vice President of Regional Operations for Medica. Prior to joining Medica, Glenn served as Operations Director for United Behavioral Systems in Minneapolis, MN. He has been employed as a mental health clinic manager and as a practicing psychologist licensed in Minnesota, Kentucky and Indiana. Glenn received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Evansville, Evansville, IN. He also earned both a masters and a doctorate degree in psychology from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN.
Carol Berde joined the Board in January 2000 and currently serves as the Board Chair. She is a strategy consultant for non-profits and philanthropies. Carol retired as executive vice president of the McKnight Foundation after twenty-five years of service, directing programs in community development, opportunities for families and children, and international giving. While at McKnight, she developed major programs including a small loan program for low-income families that is now available nationally in more than 50 communities, a statewide fund to finance affordable housing, and a statewide initiative to help welfare-to-work succeed at the community level, which received the inaugural Paul Ylvisaker Award for Public Policy Engagement from the Council on Foundations.
Christine Bronson, joined the Board in April of 2009. She has been a supporter of Hearth Connection’s mission and research methodology since its inception. Christine has a deep background in both social services policy and health care policy, having served as committee administrator of the Minnesota House Health and Human Services Budget Committee and as a researcher for the National Conference of State Legislators. She was Minnesota’s Medicaid Director from 2004-2009 and served on the National Association of State Medicaid Director’s Executive Committee during that time. Most recently, Christine led the Minnesota Department of Human Services and its $9 billion annual budget as Deputy Commissioner from 2006 through February 2009. Christine has a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and a masters degree in political theory from Columbia University in New York City.
Julie Brunner joined the Board in July 2011. Julie is the Executive Director of the Minnesota Council of Health Plans, an association of Minnesota’s nonprofit health plan companies. Before becoming the Council’s Executive Director in January 2003, Julie served as the Deputy Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Health. She has also served as the County Administrator for St. Louis County and Director of Child Support Enforcement for the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office. In addition to Hearth Connection, Julie is a board member with Portico Healthnet, MN Community Measurement and is involved in many health care groups. She received her law degree from the University of Minnesota Law School.
Katherine (Kit) Hadley was Director of the Minneapolis Public Library, leading its merger with the Hennepin County library system, restructuring the library during a time of significant budget cuts, overseeing completion of the new central downtown library, and helping the library’s first private capital campaign succeed. Previously, Kit was Commissioner of the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency for eight years, following many years as a legal services attorney. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in urban studies from Hampshire College and a law degree from the University of Minnesota. She has served on the adjunct faculty of William Mitchell College of Law, Hamline University and Metropolitan State University. She is also currently a board member of the Minneapolis Foundation and the University of Minnesota Foundation, and has served on the boards of the St. Paul Public Housing Authority, the Minnesota Citizens League and the National Council of State Housing Agencies.
Randy Hornstine was a founding member, starting with the Board in July 1999. He is the Secretary of the Board. Randy has been involved with the Pilot since the initial Design Team. Randy has brought his personal learnings from living with AIDS and disability to the Pilot. He is active in meeting with others living with HIV/AIDS who struggle to get access to housing, medication and health care. President of the Board of The Aliveness Project.
Charles Hudson joined the Board in September 2004. He first started working with Hearth Connection in September 2001 as a part of Hearth Connection's consumer advisory board, People Taking Action. Charles brings his perspective as a homeless youth and success in supportive housing to the Board. Charles has also worked with District 202 and Project Offstreets.
Kelli Johnson joined the Board in March 2005. She is a research fellow in Health Policy and Management at the University of Minnesota. She has 20 years of experience working in the state health policy arena and has an in-depth knowledge of government structures and political processes. Past employment includes Allina Health System, the Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota House of Representatives. She is currently pursuing a doctorate in Evaluation Studies at the University of Minnesota.
Gothriel J. (Fred) La Fleur joined the Board in January 2000. Fred retired in 2008 as the assistant county administrator for criminal justice at Hennepin County. Fred's professional career in government spans over thirty years, primarily as a criminal justice professional. He has held positions in the field of corrections ranging from probation and parole officer to prison warden to Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Reverend Craig J. Lewis, M.Div. joined the Board in April 2002, and serves as its Treasurer. He has served as an executive director of the Friendly Inn Settlement House in Cleveland and of the Commission for Multicultural Ministries in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. He has held several other leadership positions including Chief Executive Officer of Shorebank Neighborhood Institute and Founder of the West Central Development Corporation. Craig is also the co-founder of Truth Church in Prince George's County, Maryland, which is designed to become a leadership development center for evangelical outreach among African Americans. He was senior pastor at Central Lutheran Church in downtown Minneapolis from 1999 to 2002. His current venture is called Abundant Life Enterprises, helping local non-profits and entrepreneurs create social enterprises linked to community development.
Chuck Loban joined the Board in January 2000. Chuck retired as a Licensed Psychologist at Rise Incorporated. He worked at Community University Health Care Center for over twenty years, focused on serving special populations, including addressing mental health issues for refugee populations, homeless persons, and gay men dealing with domestic violence. Before receiving his masters in counseling psychology from St. Thomas, Chuck practiced in the area of chemical dependency treatment, at Pharm House, H.E.A.R.T., Inc., Hazelden and Winaki House.
